Mamas Empowering Mamas Through Nutrition And Movement

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

We don’t…Ha! Is this the wrong answer?

Our roles within The Balanced Mama Project do not yet pay the bills – unfortunately! The Balanced Mama Project is an ongoing passion project and we both work outside of the home in other roles.

So, the juggle between family, work and The BMP is something we struggle with. If we’re being completely honest, we’re usually dropping the ball in at least one area! But maybe that’s just motherhood for you…a reminder that you can’t always do everything, be everywhere and please everyone!

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

We are immensely proud to say we have done almost everything ourselves from website/IT ‘stuff’ to setting up our online course to filming exercise videos (complete with baby in the front pack or on the boob!)

There have been plenty of nights we worked close to midnight trying to get our online course ready for launch – a date we unknowingly set for the middle of Level 4 lockdown.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

The cons are that you only get out what you put in. We’re both mums-to-two and working part-time (outside of The Balanced Mama Project), so we can feel constantly busy and pulled in all directions. It can be very easy to let things slide – like marketing – and then wonder why registrations for The Fourth are slowing!

The pros are that we are so invested in this brand we’ve created. And at the end of the day, it’s not about sales or making money, it’s about supporting women and making a difference for NZ mamas. If women come across The Balanced Mama Project and feel supported, heard and educated about their postpartum health (which is forever after you’ve had a baby), then we’ve done our job.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

Our goal for The Balanced Mama Project is to expand our course offerings to a pregnancy and ‘first year of motherhood’ course. These courses will complement The Fourth and cover nutrition and movement advice for the expectant and new mama, including pre and postnatal-safe workouts and recipe ideas for nourishing yourself and your family.

Our ultimate goal would be for all mothers to feel supported and have access to the information we share.
