Mother for Life: Creating a Supportive Community for Women

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

I had to overcome my own struggle with postnatal depression, which was lengthy, unexpected and quite heartbreaking for me.

Losing my sense of who I was when I became a mum was also challenging, as was stopping being a lawyer.

Mindset is another one: my self-belief and the fact that I used to feel uncomfortable about asking for payment for what I do. I’ve had to work very hard at realising that my time is valuable and that I am entitled to charge for it.

It can also be a juggle balancing work and parenting.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

There are many pros to running my own business, like doing what I love and being able to evolve with my business. There is more flexibility – I don’t think I work less hours, but I have much more control over when those hours are. I have more time with my family and also some time to focus on what I want.

I have also created lifelong friendships with many of the mums I have worked with and other people I have met through networking, etc. I have a beautiful sense of fulfilment in knowing that I am making a difference to the lives of many, many women, and I love being a role model to my daughters and feel truly honoured that they are proud of what I have done.

In terms of cons, there is always something that can be done ‘in’ the business, so stepping away can be hard. You have to set boundaries or you could be working 24/7.

It’s lonely doing it on your own and it takes a while to create a network of supporters to go to when you need them, and, as a sole practitioner, you are ultimately responsible for everything, which feels overwhelming at times.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

I want to further develop the Mother Circle Guide Programme and train Mother Circle Guides in every continent. At the moment, there are Guides in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia so I am getting there. I aim to create a global network of Mother for Life Mother Circles supporting mums in every part of the world and creating a generation of empowered feminine leaders.

I love the business mentoring aspect of the Programme and I’m working on a stand-alone business mentorship offering.

I’m also creating a coaching programme for women who have difficult relationships with other women, whether personally or professionally, and these relationships are holding them back from being happy and reaching their full potential.

All my businesses are bound by my goal of bringing balance to the masculine and the feminine by creating a world where women support and value each other whether this be as mother, sister, friend or colleague.
