Motherhood – in the raw: A self-help book

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

I probably don’t balance work and family life as well as I should (in other words, I barely sleep when baby sleeps). Having a newborn in the mix of this journey has been hard work as she is super intelligent and energetic every minute of every day. I seem to do most of my work after her 5 am feed when she is enjoying her nap. * Yawn*

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

Before pregnancy I was quite the social butterfly, but pretty much as soon as I found out I was pregnant very few stuck by me or tried to maintain a friendship with me. I didn’t particularly fight to keep these friendships either, if I didn’t feel the effort was reciprocated. That was then followed by many health issues during pregnancy, traumatic childbirth and a relationship that was struggling to survive all of these adjustments on top of my partner having severe mental health issues. We aren’t out of the woods as of yet and every day is a work in progress, but I feel what we have been through significant challenges which we have overcome.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

The pros of running my own business are that I can work any time I like, I don’t have a boss to answer to, I don’t have to deal with workplace politics and I get to see my daughter all day every day and maintain my housework as I go. The cons are the feelings of isolation, the fact you cannot escape your chores even if you wanted to, and that once you get inspired, it can be very hard to switch off for the day and ‘go home’ so to speak.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

Ultimately, I would love to be a stay-at-home mum with at least two more kids to come. I would also love to run many events and fundraisers for new parents battling depression or mental illnesses, or even just support groups for mums and dads who want a raw true environment that they feel they can turn to and discuss anything. Most of all, I wish that no other new parent has to feel as scared and alone as I did at times, and I am willing to provide a support network like no other.
