Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
As a birth doula, work can happen at any time for any amount of time. Interestingly, the more I dedicate my life to supporting women in their childbearing years, the more my own support network has strengthened! I have my own wonderful village of friends and family who will look after my children if I am called out to a birth at any hour of the morning!
When I am with my children and not working, I make sure that we enjoy quality time to share and connect. Spending time is not about spending money or “doing” activities. We love to enjoy the simple things that life offers – cooking dinner together, bathing together, snuggling up and bed time, reading together on the couch.
Also, my daughter comes to all of my classes and helps me to set up and makes cups of tea for the women – it’s a great way to teach her how to be of service to others, but also a lovely way for us to spend time together.
The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I have found that my biggest challenges have been my own limiting beliefs. Fear has kept me small, but breaking out of mind patterns that do not serve me has allowed me to grow personally. Simultaneously my business has also flourished.
My personal journey of finding peace in my own life has helped me to design a course that shines the light on the inner unfolding that occurs in pregnancy, birth and motherhood.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros are I can work with my own flow. When I feel creative, I write content; when I feel reflective, I journal. When I need inspiration, I meet with my clients; and of course, when I am tired, I can rest. Running my own business has helped me to fully embody all of my teachings – to walk my talk.
The cons are no sick pay (but interestingly when you are living in alignment you rarely get sick!).
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I am currently working to put my course The Art of Support into an online format. This course teaches dads or birthing partners how to support their partner during labour and birth.
I hope to do some training overseas next with some of my favorite and inspiring doula mentors. I’d like to take my course around the world!
I very much trust my journey and know that whatever unfolds will be exactly what I am meant to be doing.
