Our First Year Doing Elimination Communication

Bringing children into this world naturally uses resources, but we can all make conscious choices to lessen this load at a time Papatūānuku/Mama Earth needs it most. EC truly lightens the environmental impact of raising a little one by using fewer disposable nappies and/or not needing to wash as many reusable nappies. We also loved the improved hygiene (we had zero nappy rash) and there were a few poops when I thought thank goodness that’s in a potty and I didn’t have to clean it up! I also liked being able to monitor our bub’s hydration and poops – especially when it came to solids. I felt a little more in tune with which foods were working for him and which weren’t.

EC has been a game-changer for our little family. When I started learning about this option, it wasn’t super easy to figure out how it works. This definitely motivated me to make the information more accessible for Kiwi families if they wanted to explore this option. We have created a Facebook page called ‘Sustainable Babies in NZ’ if you want to get a more detailed insight into how EC works. Use the guides on this page as all the info has been slotted into each section making it easier to go through. Here’s to an extra option in the sustainable parenting realm!
