Pregnancy can feel like a fleeting chapter – a time of profound change, anticipation and connection that can feel impossible to hold onto once it has passed. For Amber Carter, it was her own pregnancy that sparked a desire to preserve the magic of this journey. A lifelong love of travel, photography and collecting treasured mementos had taught her the value of keeping a physical reminder of life’s most significant moments, and she knew that pregnancy deserved the same kind of lasting tribute. Spending months extensively researching every aspect of 3D scanning and bronze casting, she founded The Bronzed Belly, creating personal, elegant pregnancy sculptures designed to be cherished for generations. Here, Amber talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about the passion behind her work, the challenges she has overcome along the way, and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
I spent many years traveling the world and collecting photographs, memorabilia and keepsakes of my journeys. Each item would come with its own story. When I returned home, I embarked on the greatest journey yet – becoming a mother. This is what led me to create The Bronzed Belly. Throughout my pregnancy I felt an overwhelming desire to preserve the magic of this incredible journey. There’s something so powerful and fleeting about watching your body nurture new life and I longed for a meaningful way to remember it – something I could truly hold onto and cherish long after this chapter had passed.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
The Bronzed Belly began with a vision to create timeless keepsakes that honour the journey into motherhood. Before launching, I spent many months researching every aspect of the process, from sourcing pregnancy-safe 3D scanning technology, learning specialised skills required to scan, and digital editing of the personalised scans. I dedicated countless hours to training, refining techniques and understanding how to prepare scans for high-quality finishes. I immersed myself in the bronze casting process, learning how a 3D scan is then transformed into a handcrafted bronzed sculpture. To ensure the highest quality result, I worked with several sample clients testing and refining the process until I was confident in the final product and experience I could offer.
Building The Bronzed Belly has been a lengthy and rewarding journey, requiring patience, persistence and a commitment to excellence. As a full-time mother myself, raising an 18-month-old and an 8-week-old baby, growing a business alongside a family life certainly has its challenges. Starting a small business is far from easy, but seeing mothers holding their personalised sculptures that capture such a significant chapter of their lives makes every step of the journey worthwhile.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
The biggest breakthrough for me was receiving our very first bronze sculpture. After months of research, development, testing and refinement, finally holding the complete piece in my hands was an incredibly rewarding moment.
What struck me most was the weight and permanence of solid bronze. It immediately reinforced the value of what we were creating – a true, personalised heirloom piece. Bronze is a metal that has stood the test of time for centuries and knowing that these sculptures can be passed down through generations makes the work incredibly meaningful.
That moment gave me confidence that The Bronzed Belly was offering something truly special: not just a keepsake but a lasting legacy that captures one of the most significant chapters to a family’s story. Seeing clients connect emotionally with their sculptures and knowing they will be treasured for a lifetime is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Balancing work and family is one of the most rewarding yet challenging aspects of running a business. As a full-time mother, my family will always be my first priority, and I have learned to build my business around that.
My husband works overseas 6 months of the year, so when he is home, he is incredibly present and invested in his family life. His support gives me valuable time to focus on growing The Bronzed Belly, meeting with clients and continuing to develop the business. I believe having a supportive partner is invaluable when building a business. Knowing that my husband believes in what I do and encourages me to pursue my passion has made a significant difference. While balancing motherhood and small business isn’t always easy, I feel fortunate having a strong support system that allows me to dedicate time to both my family and The Bronzed Belly.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Like any small business, there have been many challenges along the way. One of the most significant challenges was mastering the art of 3D scanning and digital sculpting. When I first started, I quickly realised that creating high quality scans involved much more than operating the scanner. There were many technical elements to learn, particularly around lighting, which plays a crucial role in capturing each individual personalised scan’s fine details. Through weeks of practice, I discovered that improving my studio lighting dramatically enhanced the quality of the scans, allowing me to create sculptures that truly felt personal to each individual mother.
Another challenge was learning the software required to edit and prepare the scans for 3D printing. Coming from a non-technical background, this was a steep learning curve. Many people study 3D design, scanning and printing through formal education, whereas I taught myself through online tutorials, research and hours of hands-on practice. Fortunately, I also had support from an incredible 3D team in Auckland who supplied the scanner to me. Their guidance, expertise and willingness to share their knowledge were invaluable through the learning process.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
There are so many pros to running your own business and very few cons.
PROS:
The pro of running your own business is having the flexibility around your family. Being your own boss allows you to schedule scanning sessions around your family and other commitments. It’s meaningful work. We are preserving one of the most important moments in a woman’s life. Many clients become emotional when they see their sculpture, which makes the work incredibly rewarding. The work is unique as there are very few businesses in New Zealand who offer luxury pregnancy sculptures using 3D scanning technology.
CONS:
Educating the market is a small hurdle, as not many people have heard of pregnancy sculptures created through 3D scanning, so you do need to spend time on advertising, marketing and explaining the process and value of what we are offering. Because every piece is crafted carefully between scanning, editing, printing, mold making, bronze casting and the final finishes, the process can take months before the client can receive their personalised sculptures. Clients sometimes need reassurance during the wait period.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
The Bronzed Belly is still in its early stages, having officially launched just six months ago. Much of that time has been dedicated to building awareness, connecting with expectant mothers and becoming part of the wider motherhood community throughout New Zealand.
Looking ahead, I have some exciting goals for the next 12 months. One of my biggest aspirations is to establish a dedicated studio space. Currently, I welcome clients into my home studio for their scanning sessions, which has been a wonderful way to begin the business, but I would love to create a purpose-built space that offers an even more elevated experience for my clients.
I also plan to continue expanding our pop-up studio sessions in Auckland and Tauranga. My goal is to offer these regularly each month as the business grows, making The Bronzed Belly more accessible to mothers across the country.
We are also excited to be exhibiting at the Baby Expo in October, which will be a fantastic opportunity to connect with more expectant mothers and families, share our story and showcase the beautiful sculptures we create.
Ultimately, my vision is for The Bronzed Belly to become New Zealand’s leading pregnancy sculpture studio, preserving the journey into motherhood through timeless heirloom pieces that can be treasured forever.
