Real Life. Real Kitchen: Nourishing Families & Restoring Connection

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

Errrmmm… now there’s a question! I’m a recovering perfectionist and last-minute monger who has only recently come to terms with the fact that “go big or go home!” just won’t work with my version of motherhood! Real Life. Real Kitchen. will grow through consistent and small steps, Zoom calls during nap times, blogposts written early in the morning, tech battles within 15-minute snatches. My family are the priority and so I’m blessed to create a business that fits around them, rather than the other way round.

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

Everything from entrepreneur imposter-syndrome, losing my website (briefly), dying inside trying to explain exactly what I do and why it’s worth paying me for it (I mean, where have all the World War II grannies gone that used to do this?!) and the fear of pitching to podcasts.

I’m still amazed at how far this business has grown, how much I have learned and how excited I am to see how far it will go.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

The pros are that I love meeting new people, helping other mamas, writing, being creative…especially when it comes to leftovers and practical homemaking systems that work! Real Life. Real Kitchen is such an important outlet for me and as a result makes me a better mother and wife.

As for cons, TECH and getting my big-girl pants on when it comes to less-than-creative things like finance, spreadsheets and taxes. Boring but important. I’m sure it’s good exercise for my underdeveloped left-brain…

Hopes and dreams: What next?

A podcast! There are so many fascinating people out there with homemaking and cooking wisdom; this sort of stuff needs to be shared with curious mamas hungry for something deeper than what the world at large is currently offering. Watch this space!
