As an osteopath, Laura Hathaway was treating patients whose scars from surgery were contributing to lack of free movement, back pain and restriction in joints above or below the incision point. Treating an assortment of scars: from knee or shoulder surgery to caesarean sections and hip replacements, she came up with an effective treatment plan for her patients. Although effective, she knew it could be improved upon, so the idea of developing a product specifically for scar treatment blossomed. After many months of research and trials with numerous prototypes, The Scar Wand was born, an effective and affordable solution to improve the function and mobility of scars. Here Laura talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about the passion behind her business, the challenges she has overcome and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
I was inspired by the idea of being able to help all the people who have suffered trauma and have been left with physical scars. My aim was to improve the function and mobility of those scars, alongside helping people to connect and re-engage with their scars.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
The idea was planted about 2019, but I sat on it and thought I couldn’t possibly be the first one on the market. Eventually, I decided to take a risk. With research and trials, the shape, material and cream took around 18 months or so to develop. We finally launched in February 2023.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
Our biggest breakthrough was seeing the remarkable effects at the London Marathon Running Show in April 2023. The range of scars we saw in such a short space of time and the effectiveness of the product really reminded me why I am doing this. We had tears, laughter, and scars that hadn’t been touched for 15 years!!
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
This is something I’ve struggled with (ask my husband) since having our daughter. She is at school now and she always asks questions and wants to do clubs, etc. I love being Mum, so I have to be very strict on myself and make sure there is time for Bo, John and I in all combinations.
