Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
During the early stages, I struggled with this and tried to do too many things at once. This meant a lot of late nights! Now I just outsource any tasks if I don’t have the time.
I work on my business most days and just do what I can with the time I have and don’t stress or put too much pressure on myself to get things done. There are not enough hours in the day to do everything!
I will eventually hire someone to help with day-to-day tasks or look at using a third-party logistics company when the time comes.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
A new career change and learning a whole new area of e-commerce was challenging.
I am also time poor as a mum of two young children, as well as working part time in another job. I have no support network as all my family live in UK, so there is limited hands-on support for me.
We are saving for a house and every time I buy new stock, that money is taken from our deposit. I have a lot of guilt around this. There are a lot of up-front and ongoing costs associated with running a business that you don’t realise at the beginning, however I believe in the bigger picture and in the long term this will pay off (fingers crossed!).
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros include: being your own boss and making all of your own decisions; flexibility around the hours and days you work; and that feeling of achievement when you reach your goals.
The biggest con is finding the time to do everything in a day for business needs as well as staying on top of household and children obligations!
Hopes and dreams: What next?
From a personal perspective, I would like to be there for my children and be a great role model. I would love to take my family to Iceland, and spend a Christmas with my family in the UK.
From a business perspective, I would like to dedicate more time to working on and expanding Baby Roo and wholesale my products.
