The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Ha great question. So many, all the time, as every mother will tell you – that’s a daily feature of our lives.
My own self-doubt is probably my biggest challenge. Like many women and mothers in business, that voice in our head can be less than encouraging at times. I work hard to maintain a growth mindset so that set-backs don’t trip me up too badly.
Fiercely Gentle is born out of this idea that we must be ‘fiercely gentle’ with ourselves and our little ones. Being kind, patient and gentle is a skill and it takes strength; it is a choice and a necessity if we want to support our own nervous systems and raise children with a healthy sense of self. I apply this concept to my own life all the time. I am constantly reframing my thoughts to be kinder and am the queen of celebrating all my small wins. You’ve got to be this for yourself!
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
I get to be creative and set my hours (somewhat). I get to use my expertise to help people as best I can and am not restrained by a company’s values or way of doing things. I can be as flexible and responsive as I want to be with the women I am working with. There is no pre-defined solution and time frame when it comes to helping someone; different women have different needs.
I am also free to research the areas in women’s health I am most interested in and again, I am not restrained or limited in my scope of focus.
For now, I have to wear all the hats and do the things I am not good at like the minor details and accounting. One day I look forward to employing people who enjoy doing the things I am not as good at.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I want to keep connecting with women and mothers in a meaningful way that truly helps them to ‘woman’ and mother how they want to. Empowered and healthy mothers are foundational to a healthy society.
