Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
I won’t lie – this is tough! When it comes to my passion, I am a self-professed workaholic. In previous jobs, I always had someone else to tell me to have a break, but when you own your own business, there is always something else to do. But I am learning to set boundaries for myself: scheduling breaks, having work-free days and blocking my diary for hobbies, self-care and family.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
My biggest challenge has always been myself. Initially, my confidence was my biggest challenge and I had to overcome many mental barriers when I first started my business.
It was nerve-wracking starting up a business, being the youngest practitioner in my area and working in a niche market.
It’s been a journey in itself but I have experienced a lot of growth personally and professionally by stepping out without fear, challenging my self-limiting beliefs and being my most authentic version of me. My business is better for it too!
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Running a business is a labour of love. It is a blessing to wake up every day and do what you love, and go home to bed at night knowing that you are slowly making a difference in the lives of others. There is also the added bonus of setting your own hours, managing your schedule and being your own boss. It sounds fantastic – it is! But there are also downsides, which nobody tells you about. Owning a small business is hard work. I am a one-man team which means I not only have the role of being a naturopath, but I am also my own accountant, marketer, cleaner and administrator and all the other little roles that need to be done.
This means quite a few late nights, early mornings, weekend work and stress! But I wouldn’t change it for anything.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I am a big dreamer, so this is only the beginning for me! My big dream is to own a holistic health centre here in Palmerston North. A one-stop shop for multiple health practitioners, including naturopaths, herbalists, massage therapists, colon hydrotherapists, acupuncturists, osteopathy and even a yoga studio! I am also in the process of planning a transformational retreat for those who need a health reset, detox or a little TLC. More to come!
