The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Passion, motivation, setting short- and long-term goals is what counts. But to be honest the positive feedback I get from my customers is what keeps the drive alive. I had never really used Instagram much (at my age) – I didn’t even know how to make a story. “Collaborations” is definitely a new word I have learnt this year! I think marketing has been the biggest challenge because I have had to learn this all by myself from scratch. At times when I feel despondent, my husband and two sons are my biggest supporters, helping me to believe in myself, that I am capable of becoming a successful entrepreneur.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
This is a good question. There is a lot to be said for self-worth – that is a positive. I have overcome so many hurdles and managed to do what I thought impossible. The pros and cons are actually quite similar. Sometimes I wonder if it’s easier to work for someone else. Running a business of your own is not easy. I have to continuously push myself to stay motivated, complete my tasks for each day and sometimes it never feels like it’s enough – as though the list never ends. I made a commitment to myself, and I will not let myself down. My customer’s happiness is my top priority, and I endeavour at all times to make sure they have a truly positive experience from beginning to end. In summary, when I feel on top of things, I realise that I made the right decision. I get to have it all. Family and work, finding a positive balance – and soon enough, some “me time” to relax and enjoy the benefits of running my own small business from home.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I am so excited for the path ahead with growing the brand. I lie in bed at night thinking of new ways to expand and new ways to make my customers happy. I am busy launching a new addition to the business called Just Teethers. This came about with a massive amount of customer interest. Just Teethers will be an in-house brand with a variety of cute and functional teethers that not only look good in any baby’s hands but also satisfy the baby’s need to chew on something for teething relief. As a mother, I know just how necessary this is. I look forward to growing the variety of stock we offer and expanding my customer base. Who knows – my brand may one day become a name that everyone knows and enjoys.
