Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Balancing work and family is always a hard one. The routines of babies and kids change all the time, so it’s all about adapting and accepting I can’t always run the business to the capacity I’d like to. Strict childcare COVID sickness policies have also thrown another hurdle to the balancing act, which I’m sure all parents are feeling.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
There is no big team behind the scenes at Monday Silks. It’s just me. Although I have great outside support, there’s no-one I can turn to in the moment and ask for a quick opinion or to get some help. I’ve learnt to be more patient and to trust my own opinion a bit more. Also knowing I’m not the only one in this situation helps.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The big pro for me is maintaining some mental and creative stimulation that still provides flexibility around the kids.
In terms of cons, for a long time, I would call Monday Silks my hobby, as all funds were being used to continuously build up stock. Like any business owner starting out, there were a lot of unpaid hours.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
We would love to extend our silk baby sheets and silk pillowcase range with more silk goodies one day, so watch this space!
