The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I am an ardent believer that individuals making sustainable choices has a huge collective impact. As a business owner, I am in the position to leave an even greater fingerprint.
In two forms, sustainability is economic and ecological.
Ecologically, I choose better. Our timber is managed by responsible forestry practices in Australia and its harvest is strictly regulated to ensure long-term sustainability. Our ink is Greenguard GOLD certified ink. This is a world-leading certification for low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission products. Our lanyards are biodegradable and made from PET recycled material. All our packaging is recyclable and where possible, compostable or made from recycled material. We source, sample, thoroughly test and select the highest quality material and packaging domestically assuring safety, durability and quality.
On an economic level, The BE at Ease Company is Australian owned with all operations, manufacturing and design occurring within our border. Australian standard ensures we produce ethically and adhere to strict quality and environmental standards whilst promoting Australian economical sustainability.
Additionally, the creation of an innovative product held me responsible for laying the foundation for an uncharted path.
Equally, I am the holder of sensitive personal information of which I have the duty to diligently protect, requiring custom-built security measures.
The cost of this is directly reflected in a higher bottom line.
Simply put, each and every day I make the choice to place my ethos above all else and consciously choose to do better than to do cheaper. As a business owner, cost versus profitability is the greatest objection and one I refuse to compromise on.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The segmentation of time is a persistent issue. Despite my greatest organisational efforts, intrusive thoughts breach into personal time and technological accessibility allows me to indulge them.
On the converse, business ownership permits me to work to my family’s schedule. I can create a product aligning with my sustainability ethos whilst providing peace of mind to so many people and keeping all our children safe.
