Trauma Informed Yoga for Pregnancy, Birth & Women’s Wellness

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

I am married and have two children ages six and eight and two ginger tom cats. I am grateful that I run my own business as I am able to set my own hours and work so that I can be there for my children as much as possible. My own yoga practice has greatly informed my own births, birth recoveries and my ability to be mentally present and receptive to the needs of my children on a daily basis. Yoga is really a keystone and daily practice in my own life as well as my work so that I can show up for my family with compassion and from a place where my own needs for self-care are also met.

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

As a family, we have relocated twice from Edinburgh to Devon and have now settled in the Scottish Borders where we have put down roots. This has meant adapting to a lot of change and building and rebuilding my business up, which has also given me the time and space to assess what is really important to me and focus on my passion. Covid and lockdown have also meant that my business had to change so that I could offer sessions online from home and also look after my two small children.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

I love running my own business, as I get to focus on my passion and help people through challenging times of transformation within their lives such as pregnancy, birth and recovery. As for cons, I think I am getting better at knowing when to outsource something that I struggle with such as marketing, admin and website issues. I think self belief is important and knowing when to ask for help when I need it is part of that. I feel very fortunate to be able to run my own business.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

I would like to see trauma informed yoga for pregnancy, birth and women’s wellness be widely available to help as many people as possible. This may include offering training to other yoga teachers, and making sure the work is inclusive and accessible to all who need it. In the future, I hope to bring the work to women’s refuges and be able to offer grant funded places.
