When a Perinatal Psychologist Becomes a Mother

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

Like many people, life has thrown many challenges my way. But more recently, I’d say a huge challenge for us was creating a new life in Brisbane when we moved here in 2021 from Townsville in Far North Queensland when my daughter was only 9 months old.

Within a matter of 12 months, I had become a mother, moved cities, started a new job, established new friendships and discovered we were unexpectantly expecting our 2nd baby. It was huge. Since my beautiful son was born, we have moved house again and I started my business. It has been an intense couple of years with lots of ups and downs, filled with many laughs and many tears.

Despite the challenges and adjustment, I truly believe discomfort is a catalyst for growth.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

Having the flexibility to control my calendar and case load is a very big pro for running my own business. I love the autonomy, independence and being self-sufficient.

Given that I have two children in daycare who are frequently exposed to germs and illnesses, I sometimes need to stay home and care for them. Not only is it not ideal to have sick children., I also do not make any income on days I am not working. So, a con for running my own business is needing to juggle my role of motherhood with financial requirements. Bills don’t stop when you have days off.

But ultimately, I am beyond grateful to have the rewarding opportunity to work with women and families and create a business that aligns with my values and beliefs.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

I’m very excited to be completing the Circle of Security Parenting™ (COSP) Facilitator training next month which will complement the attachment-based parenting support I already offer

I’m also slowly working towards preparing online groups and webinars that will be packed full of information to support women during their pregnancy and postpartum season of life. Like everything right now, it is a work in progress.
