Having been through her fair share of stress, anxiety and overwhelm, juggling years of study, motherhood, work, and declining health, Kama Gore hit burnout and knew things needed to change. Through her own personal journey, and her years of experience in natural medicine and health foods, she identified a need for a place for mums to feel heard and seen. It is her mission to help people reconnect with themselves and utilise the gift of natural medicine to heal physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Here she talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about the passion behind Kama Health, the challenges she has overcome along the way, and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
I always knew that I wanted to have my own my business – and working for myself has had a number of evolutions. I started in business in 2009 as a massage therapist whilst studying naturopathy. With the overwhelming juggle of kids, study, massage and part-time work, I relinquished massage to focus on just study and work (and kids of course!).
After studying natural medicine and working in health food stores for 12 years, in addition to navigating many health challenges of my own, I saw a need for a place where mums felt heard and seen. Where they can address more than just their physical symptoms.
I discovered that so many women were feeling overwhelmed with health information, seeing doctors or specialists without answers, or integrating the advice and medicines offered by natural health practitioners without enough guidance.
I have created my own unique method which integrates natural medicine, coaching and energy medicine. It offers a unique perspective and allows women to become their own healers. In 2020, I took the leap and leased a clinic room for 2 days a week to provide this service.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I was still working part-time in a health food store when I opened my clinic 2 days a week in 2020. Armed with a Bachelor of Complementary Medicine, Meditation leader certification and Reiki practitioner training, I was offering wellness support and Reiki healing initially. These services were available in-person and online.
I continued to add to my skillset to support my clients more. This included BodyMind Coaching, Aura Healing and trauma-informed coaching certifications.
In 2021, I left retail and transitioned into my clinic and online full-time, whilst also working as a subcontractor doing marketing and social media for other wellness businesses as I grew my business.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
Receiving coaching and energy healing helped me to shift energetic blockages and enhance my mindset around self-worth and abundance.
Going through the BodyMind coaching process myself opened my eyes to what options are available in the world thanks to technology. The coaching process is just as powerful online as in-person!
Starting a business from scratch is not for the faint-hearted, but I believe if your vision is clear, the rewards are immeasurable.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
The age-old question! Whilst absolutely not perfect, I have learnt to be very clear with boundaries in regards to my time and energy. This is crucial for anyone, but even more so when you are in business for yourself. This is because there is no official “clock-off time” and you can always be “doing more”! My kids are aged 8 and 13 and still demand and need my undistracted time and attention.
Closing down the computer by 5.30pm is my goal. I have created a life where flexibility is key – so I can pick my kids up from school, make them some afternoon tea, then do a bit more work before it’s time to shut down for the day. I keep my “client hours” mostly within school time and work less during school holidays.
