Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
That’s a tough one; it’s an ongoing struggle! In addition to Sleep Seeker Co., I also have other work commitments, so I have to be super organised. I try to minimise my home duties as much as possible by pre-cooking meals and using My Food Bag. I have just managed to find an excellent cleaner to help me once a fortnight – she is one of my favourite people and one of the best investments I’ve made for our family. Minimising these duties takes some of the pressure off at home and allows us to connect as a family and have some downtime.
My youngest has recently started school, so it’s important to me to keep my working hours in line with school hours so I’m able to collect her at 3 pm. This is a priority for me as I missed out on having this opportunity with my oldest when I worked full time as she was growing up. Doing this usually means I work a bit at night and at least half a day in the weekend while my daughter has quality time with her dad, but it is worth it and I cherish the time I get to spend with her.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
The biggest challenge has been time, or lack thereof. As mentioned, I have other commitments, so carving out dedicated time to work on Sleep Seeker has been demanding. When you create a business from scratch and have to wear almost every hat, it’s an awful lot of work, and I’ve often found myself working in my home office rather than enjoying the weekend! But I’m so passionate about this business and honestly believe in it – If you find work you love, it’s not a chore. It’s a joy.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
I’m the kind of person who gets bored a bit too easily if I’m doing the same thing for too long, so I have a pretty vast range of skills and experience which I have developed over the years from jumping from project to project. So for me, running my own business allows me to utilise all my knowledge and skills, which I love. There are no two days the same. One day, I might be working on a photoshoot for my website, and the next, I’m having deep conversations with one of our customers about their own sleep issues. I love the variety and the thrill of running my own business.
On the other hand, it’s a lot of work and a big financial commitment. Running your own business is certainly not for the faint-hearted. You need to be resilient to failure – embrace it and learn from it. Failure is one of life’s essential lessons, and in the process of owning your own business, you will have plenty of them, big and small – so you can’t let it deter you.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I have so many plans for Sleep Seeker Co. and it’s hard to resist the urge to try and do everything at once! I see so much potential in my offering and I’m so excited to see what the future holds.
For now, I’ve limited myself to my next project, which is to start developing my own range of products under the Sleep Seeker Co. brand. I have a delicious and effective sleep tea that is almost ready to hit the shelves and a few other products currently under development, so watch this space!
