The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I moved back to Sydney from Central QLD two years ago and it was a huge move in itself, let alone for my business. I was well established in Central QLD and was the only one in my field. So, to move back to a city from a regional town and redevelop my business based on the clientele here and launch it again has been challenging, but it has made me stronger. I also lost my Facebook page to hackers and all my content on it, so redeveloping a new logo, Facebook page and gaining followers again has been a great achievement. Another challenge is balancing my other job as a midwife/nurse and being a mum, which is always a challenge that I am overcoming – and trying to fill everyone’s cup, while keeping my own full.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros are that you are your own boss and can work your own hours. The cons are that you never switch off and are constantly trying to build and grow your business and look for ways to make your business the best it can be.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
My future goals are to build my business and employ new local staff to assist with Sleep Tight. I want to collaborate with a range of health professionals and build a network of amazing services to women and help decrease perinatal anxiety and depression. I’m also studying to become a lactation consultant and I will add this qualification, as well as postnatal support, to families in the first 6 weeks post baby. I’m also interested in running local antenatal classes that are desperately needed at the moment, as lots have fallen through after Covid, and hospitals have a strict number which is often full. Antenatal classes help give a woman and her partner the tools they need for labour and beyond and reduce the risk of traumatic birth, as well as improving perinatal mental health for the woman and her family. In the next few months, I will partner with my hospital work colleague to run sleep and settling classes and baby massage, a service we don’t have in our local community that will hugely benefit families.
