The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Bringing up 3 children in a country with no family on hand is probably one of the hardest things ever! Our kids miss out on having their grandparents and cousins close, and we have missed being able to take a breather every now and then! On the other hand, our daughters have “adopted” sets of grandparents all over Aotearoa and are incredibly social and have developed special relationships.
It has also taught us to rely deeply on each other and trust each other and hold our family ever so close.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Every now and then, I joke that I am going to throw in the towel to work as a “check-out chick” at the local supermarket! It’s not always easy birthing a vision and then driving it… Not being the most financially astute person, I struggle with numbers and systems. But it has meant I have kept things simple and processes transparent.
I am also privileged to be able to drive a business that indulges in my passion of food and people, building community – one conversation at a time, one meal at a time, one jar (of our seasonings) at a time… and most of all, I feel blessed to be able to carve a legacy for my daughters that honours my heritage.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
2024 is a going to be big for us – we have appreciated the support of the local community, enjoyed success in the stores in the South Island and as we slowly expand to the North Island, we are looking forward to being a household name for seasonings and blends, spiced honeys and our Hot Stuff Curry Oil!
