Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

I am still learning this one and I am far from nailing it!! I am so guilty of getting lost in my computer working. My 2-year-old will rush up to me, slam the computer closed, tilt her head on her shoulder and say “cute”. She is super cute, and it is also a very effective way of telling me it’s time to stop working.

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

Each step along the way has had its own unique challenges.

Business wise, I left school at 16, and writing a business plan and 2-year forecasts were just so far from natural for me.

My biggest challenge personally has been learning how to buy for my customers. This is still a work in progress. It has definitely involved a lot of trial and error and wishing I had done certain things differently at the start, but I have made peace with that and made the decision to trust myself and just go with my gut from here.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

I have three beautiful daughters (11, 9 and 2) and I love that I can take time away to attend their assemblies and sports days. Their faces when they spot me in the crowd make every single stressful and self-doubt moment worth it, and trust me, there have been plenty of those moments, but to do it for them, it really does make everything worth it.

I also love the example I have set for them, leaving the security of employment in an industry I had been in for 16 years to start up my own business and be a Mum Boss. To show them that they too can do anything they want; they just need to work for it. Equally important for them is the example shown by their dad, with him being such a big support for me, and the trust he has for me, that shows them an amazing example of a father and a man.

An added bonus is I get to play with beautiful clothes every day. I get to see them before anyone else does and with some labels, I know what’s coming a whole year before you do.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

I have never really wanted much more than we needed. We have a warm, dry home, our daughters are safe, they are loved, and our tummies are full. We have both worked hard for what we have and have also been lucky enough to have had help from some amazing family. We are very thankful.

That being said, don’t get me wrong, I do have big dreams that some days don’t feel achievable. There are personal dreams of us being able to give our daughters the horse riding lessons, family dinners out, and date nights with hubby. On the business front, I have big, big dreams of Sunday Sparrow growing and creating a community that can celebrate and love beautiful clothes. I would also looove to one day have a bricks n mortar shop of my own.

Visit the Sunday Sparrow website to browse their gorgeous range, and keep up to date by following them on Facebook and Instagram.
