Beautiful, Handmade Jewellery & Original Art Pieces

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

I have encountered several challenges along the way. Leaving my home country Colombia and starting a new life in New Zealand was a big one, and leaving a three-generation family business to pursue an idea of my own.

I think that not making any sales in some markets has made me more resilient. I used to be so nervous when approaching a new shop to sell my jewellery. Now I walk in beaming with confidence, knowing that over 13 retail stores have already accepted my products to sell.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

I love meeting new people as passionate as myself about art and watching their businesses grow alongside my own. I am inspired by other artists and love to pass on that feeling to others through my own work. Being my own boss is also a huge pro, and being able to make all the big decisions about the future of my business.

In terms of cons, when business is good, it’s great, but when business is bad, it can really get you down. Having a very supportive partner and an extended family network is so helpful when the weight of the business can be difficult to bear.

Early morning wake-ups on weekends to go to markets can be hard too, especially after late nights of working and getting my baby to sleep.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

I want to start working with other businesses and local talents to further get my work out there.

I also plan to explore new materials that are more eco-friendly and sustainable and to make a new catalogue of products sometime soon.
