A GP with 14 years’ experience, and a mum of two herself, Dr Emma Bourke is passionate about women’s health, pregnancy and caring for young children and their families in the early years. Wanting to provide a service to her local community, she started Byron Baby, a small, calm, boutique space where families who are planning a pregnancy, are currently pregnant or already have young babies/children can go to receive specialised care and advice throughout this beautiful, life-changing, but sometimes difficult stage of life. Here Emma talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about what inspired her to start Byron Baby, the pros and cons of running her own business, and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
Since having my own children, my passion within General Practice has become women’s health, pregnancy and children. I wanted to provide this service to my local community: to create a space that was calm and child friendly and didn’t feel as clinical as many GP clinics. My rooms are beautiful and I am so proud of what I have created.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I opened a year ago when I found a beautiful space at Habitat Byron Bay. It was initially just me but now I have a two wonderful receptionists, a nurse and a paediatric dietician working with me.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
Getting busier through word of mouth within the community has been a really good feeling. As well as watching my idea and business grow.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Before opening this business, I was commuting to Brisbane and spending two days away from my family. Now I am ten minutes from my kids’ school, which is so much better. Owning my own business gives me autonomy and flexibility to be there for my family when needed.
