The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
The biggest challenges I face revolve around marketing. It’s not my forte by any means, and as a small business owner, I lack the budget to hire a marketing firm, much as I wish I could. Maintaining a consistent presence on social media is particularly daunting. While I enjoy creating content, the process is time-consuming and often confusing. Recognising the need for improvement, I plan to revisit online courses I’ve previously purchased to enhance my skills in this area.
Confronting my reluctance to being in front of the camera has been a significant milestone for me this year. Despite initial hesitation, I summoned the courage to share behind-the-scenes glimpses of my soft furnishings projects with my followers. Surprisingly, driven by passion, the experience proved far less daunting than I anticipated. The overwhelming positive response from my community, expressing appreciation for my content, was both humbling and inspiring. This triumph over my fears marks a significant personal growth moment for me. I look forward to sharing future projects and updates, fostering engagement within my incredible community.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Running my own business has been an incredible journey filled with both triumphs and challenges. Let me walk you through some of the pros and cons I’ve experienced firsthand:
Pros:
- Flexibility with lifestyle and time: Being my own boss allows me to craft my schedule around my life’s priorities.
- Creativity without limits: I cherish the freedom to unleash my creativity without any boundaries.
- Ability to work from home: Working from the comfort of my own space gives me a sense of freedom and saves me valuable time.
- Connection with clients: Building genuine relationships with my clients brings me immense joy and satisfaction.
- Joy in designing and creating: There’s nothing quite like the fulfillment of personally crafting pieces that bring smiles to my clients’ faces.
- Opportunity for growth and learning: Each day brings new opportunities for me to expand my skills and evolve as an entrepreneur.
- Networking with other small business owners: Connecting with fellow entrepreneurs provides invaluable support and camaraderie.
- Authentic business development: I take pride in shaping a business that authentically reflects my values and vision.
Cons:
- Time and cost of effective marketing: Balancing marketing efforts with limited resources can be a time-consuming and costly endeavour.
- Difficulty reaching niche markets: Targeting niche markets requires strategic planning and can pose unique challenges.
- Closing sales at local markets: While local markets offer exposure, closing sales can be competitive and demand persistence.
- Work and time involved in holding stalls at expos and markets: Participating in events requires significant time and effort, but the connections made are priceless.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
As I reflect on the journey so far, I’m filled with excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. Here are some of my hopes and dreams for the future:
- Expansion and Growth: I aspire to expand my business, reaching more clients and making a greater impact in the industry.
- Community Engagement: Building a strong community around my brand is essential to me. I hope to deepen connections with my clients and fellow entrepreneurs, fostering a supportive network.
- Sustainability Initiatives: As a business owner, I’m committed to sustainability. I aim to implement more eco-friendly practices and contribute positively to the environment.
- Personal Development: My journey as an entrepreneur is also a journey of personal growth. I look forward to continuing to learn, evolve, and challenge myself in new ways.
- Creating a Physical Space: One of my most cherished dreams is to eventually have my own shop front and workroom. I envision a space where clients can not only schedule appointments but also witness firsthand how I bring their visions to life. It would be a welcoming environment where creativity thrives, and clients feel inspired and valued.
- Partnering with Boutique Stores: Another hope close to my heart is to see my bespoke collections available in baby and children boutiques that share similar values. I envision these partnerships as an opportunity to reach a wider audience while maintaining the integrity and authenticity of my brand.
- Special Project for Little Ones: Additionally, I have something special on the horizon-a project that involves creating a range that speaks Words of Life over little ones. This endeavour is particularly close to my heart, as it combines my passion for design with a desire to nurture and impart blessings on the next generation. I can’t wait to share more details and see the positive impact it will have on families and children alike.
With my faith, hopes and dreams guiding me, I’m excited to embrace the opportunities and challenges that come my way, shaping a future that is both fulfilling, impactful and a blessing to others.
