Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
It’s been challenging! Bon Savvy is like having a third child! But my real ‘babies’ are now more grown up and whilst it can be super tricky, I have been able to juggle work demands and family life a lot better now. It still means a lot of late nights and very early mornings but we make it work.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I started Bon Savvy right at the beginning of Covid. Not the smartest idea but after spending a year of trialing and testing our products, they were ready just as Covid kicked off. We couldn’t even get bottles because most of them went to hand sanitisers and our manufacturer was working overtime to make soaps and sanitisers to deal with the pandemic. It was interesting during this time though to see the social shift towards being more mindful of our health and wellbeing and elevating the importance of being aware of the kinds of products we brought into our home. Bon Savvy‘s launch suited this new paradigm, especially the increase in demand for sustainable fabrics (like linen) and our natural fabric focused wash. Plus of course, with all the supply chain issues, being Australian made meant that we were able to still be efficient with our shipping when our competitors were waiting for their products to come from overseas. There are always really tricky things that happen in manufacturing like labels being printed wrong and things going awry that you can’t anticipate. It’s far more difficult than I ever imagined it would be and I have much more respect for the products I now see on the shelf, because I know how hard it is to get them there.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
It’s exhausting, stressful and at times so overwhelming. There’s been tears. More often than I would have hoped for. But there’s also been plenty of high-fives and dancing when something amazing happens! You’re forever aware there’s a plethora of competing urgencies with the impossibility of getting it all done. But with the crazy comes the exhilaration. And it’s been so satisfying to bring a concept to fruition, see it loved by the public and identified by highly reputable entities as their go-to product. We are now even being approached by world renowned European luxury department stores that love our brand ethos and quality of product! Our baby laundry liquid “Pure Bebe” and it’s matching spray is the only one of its kind in the world where the functional element of a laundry liquid is incorporated with active care ingredients such as chamomile and aloe to calm and sooth, and this innovative approach is really gaining interest both here and internationally.
