The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
A challenge I had in the beginning was finding suppliers who would sell their products to me before the business launched. They didn’t know anything about Blossom Gift Boxes and what my brand vision would be. This is much easier now that the business is more established. The second biggest challenge was determining what products my target market would be interested in; it is all trial and error until you find what sells. This is something I am continuously working on.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
A big pro of running your own business is that you can choose your schedule and you get to take full creative control. For me, this is important because I love curating all the beautiful gift boxes. I find it quite therapeutic and enjoy shopping around for new products and then seeing my vision come to life.
The cons of owning your own business are that it can be financially really stressful and you need to be doing what you love to make it worthwhile. Working all sorts of funny hours to fit in everything you need to do, especially with a child under two, can be difficult. It is also hard to “switch off” and I am always thinking of the next thing.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
My dream for Blossom Gift Boxes is to continue to grow our customer base and have the brand be well known all over New Zealand. A goal I have is to use as many eco-friendly packaging items as I can. I am still finding ways to improve as time goes on.
What’s next for Blossom Gift Boxes? I would say to tap into corporate gifting more and continue adding new items to the store.
