Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Chryssie: I have been running my wellbeing and personal style business for 35 years and have learnt to compartmentalise my time in my diary. A to-do-list at the beginning of the week helps and I get the satisfaction of ticking things off.
Renee: I have been balancing home life, running my own health and wellness endeavour, supporting and working in the family business, plus being a mum for the last 7 years. I’ve learnt, as has Chryssie, ‘to do’ lists work a treat and being really organised is how I achieve what I do. Structure, routine, and lots of communication to each other and to the wider family certainly makes life more foreseeable. Finding someone who supports and has your back no matter what definitely allows our goals to come to fruition.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Trademarking was a challenge as all the names we came up with were either used or too similar. With some brainstorming with others, we came up with our name. It is a play on words – SPoil with a capital SP, which stands for special oils, and we want people to feel they can spoil and pamper themselves with our oil blends.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
With the way things are in the world at present, it is such a plus to be able to have a home-based business, where we don’t need a premise, saving both time and money. Being in control of our creativity and having the excitement of creating something that will serve people’s wellbeing is the basis of why we do what we do.
The challenging bit always with any new business is getting the word out there and building a creditable brand that everyone loves and wants to use, which always takes time. However, we are confident that with already having so many positive results across the board with all our range and continuing to receive endless positive feedback, we are positive it won’t take long.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
Our dream is to have many stockists throughout Aoteoroa New Zealand and create products that people want to keep coming back for and will recommend to their friends and family.
