The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Building a business as a first-time mum was challenging. I had so much drive to keep progressing my business but it was sometimes frustrating to have to hold myself back so I could be present as a mother and enjoy every moment of that new experience.
Just as I was starting to offer face-to-face workshops and start to collaborate with local businesses, the pandemic struck and so I had to rethink how I was going to market myself as a purely online business and still get noticed by people.
At the start of the pandemic, I also felt quite isolated initially because I was working from home, unable to meet friends and new clients in person. It was a long way off from leading large teams of employees in my previous career.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros of running my own business are the flexible hours to fit around my growing family; making the decisions myself rather than being a slave to the corporate machine; I get to work in a field of work I am truly passionate about; and I work from home so no more long hours commuting!
In terms of cons, I had to build up a client base from scratch with limited funds; there is no holiday pay or as much financial security; I have to think about all departments of the business (marketing, finance, business planning, social media, consultations) rather than just the job itself; and the long inflexible hours.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I have so many plans for expanding my business offerings. I am planning some online courses for pregnant and postnatal people to help improve their wellbeing with nutrition and lifestyle changes to support them through these life stages. The courses will compliment the 1:1 programmes that I currently offer my clients. I am also planning a course specifically for doulas and birth workers to broaden their nutrition knowledge to enable them to support their clients with healthy eating.
I currently have some great collaborations on the go at the moment with other practitioners in the pregnancy/postnatal and motherhood world which I hope to build on into the future. My goal is to have a variety of different priced options for my clients to choose from instead of the 1:1 private consultations.
I’m excited for the future!
