Teach good hygiene early on

Potty training is the perfect time to introduce good hygiene habits, which are more likely to stick as they grow older. After “going to the potty”, teach your child how to use toilet paper, proper disposal and wash up. Make the sink, soap and hand towel accessible with a stepping stool, and encourage them to wash their hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

You can also make hand-washing fun with colourful soaps and by singing their favourite song with them. Eventually, they may want to start doing this independently.

Practise positive reinforcement and patience

Like a lot of early developmental transitions, potty training takes time. It’s important to keep this top of mind as your little one goes (and occasionally fails!) through the motions. Provide support and positive reinforcement during the ups and downs, and instead of associating accidents with frustration, treat them as part of the learning process. Simply offer reassurance, help them change into a clean nappy and let them know what they can try to do next time.

When they do use the potty successfully, offer gentle praise and let them know what they did well. To encourage consistent potty use, you can reward progress with a Rascal + Friends CoComelon Potty Training Chart – making it a fun challenge for your little one!
