Do you care about what goes on your skin, the biggest organ of your body? These days more and more of us are getting clued up on the nasties in the products we use everyday, and are now choosing better options – but it wasn’t always so easy to find them. After having three precious children, one mum began to notice the amount of chemicals in her products and how difficult it was to find alternatives. “As a beauty therapist turned registered nurse I understand the importance of good quality, natural skincare and the benefits it has on the body,” she says, so she decided to do something about it. She began a business where she could bring together creators of beautiful, natural skincare products and showcase them in one place – The Natural Skin Collective. We talked to this thoughtful mum, Joann Kane, to find out more about her beautiful business.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
Born in Byron Bay, I have always had an appreciation for a natural lifestyle. After falling pregnant with my first baby I became very aware of what I was putting on my skin. I wanted to soak in a bath that was toxin-free and wear makeup or nail polish if I wished without putting myself or unborn baby at risk.
Looking for natural alternatives was difficult. Many claimed to be natural yet had a cocktail of chemicals in them. As a beauty therapist turned registered nurse I understand the importance of good quality, natural skincare and the benefits it has on the body.
After having my third baby and taking a break from nursing I needed a challenge. Something that I was passionate about and fitted in with family life. This led me to launch The Natural Skin Collective. I handpick truly natural, eco friendly and cruelty free brands and showcase them under one virtual roof. When you make a purchase from these brands you can be confident that what you are buying is completely natural. It takes the guesswork out. My Facebook Group, The Natural Skin Hub, is a place to find information, get support and ask questions about natural skincare and beauty.
The Launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I knew I wanted to do something that I was passionate about I looked into many avenues before deciding to take the leap with Natasha from Business Jump. Natasha and the team helped me design a website and business that I love. It’s given me the freedom and creativity that I craved. I also had the opportunity to work with a wonderful business coach, Sarah Cross. She taught me to reach for the stars and supported me in the early stages.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
Collaborating with the beautiful, unique business owners that each have their own story and point of difference and being able to share them with my audience. I’m also extremely grateful for the wonderful and engaging audience that continue to embrace and support the business and what it stands for.
