The Value of the Journey – Setting Goals That Help You Grow

How you can break down your big goal:
  1. Write it down and be specific! You need to include why it is important to you and how you will feel when you achieve it. For example, if you want to get back into the workforce after being a stay at home mum, why is it important to you to do this? What do you think it will give you? How will it make you feel by getting a new job? Don’t let yourself get caught up in guilt or fear. If those thoughts come up, write them on a separate page and keep it for later.
  2. Imagine that you have already achieved your goal. What barriers did you have to overcome to get there? How did you overcome them? For example did you overcome your fear of joining the gym by finding a friend who wanted to come with you? You may find that you clear up any fears you may have just by using your creativity to overcome them.
  3. What do you need to do as your first step? This is the hardest part. You need to choose something that you can do straight away. It could be putting a post on social media to ask if anyone you know would like to go walking with you once a week, or asking for recommendations for a babysitter. Once you have step one, work towards what you will then do in two weeks, in one month, and beyond.
  4. Find your support crew. Who in your life will be there to cheer you on? Setting the goal and deciding the steps is only the beginning. Having people who want to see you succeed keeps you going.

Goals grow with us, just like our children. In the end it is not about whether we achieve them, it is about the journey and how we grow as we work towards them. When we can separate our own lives from our children’s, we enable ourselves to have an identity. We enable ourselves to be stronger and confident. Our judgement of others fades because we are taking steps towards making choices in living our own lives and creating a lifestyle that means success to us. We are showing ourselves that we are of value and so is the journey.

How are you going to continue yours?
