Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Mum life is busy, but for me the business brings a much-needed balance, and first and foremost a creative outlet. My youngest has just started school, which is a game-changer!
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
When you’re making pieces that are from the heart, it’s kind of scary to put them out there for the public. I have had to thicken my skin, so to speak. Aesthetically we are all drawn to different things, which is what makes each one of us interesting. The flipside to that is how wonderful it is when someone falls in love with one of my pieces.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Pros would be getting to spend my time doing something that makes my heart sing. Also having flexibility when it comes to family life. My studio is in my home so I can pop out and attend events at school and make time to get outside if the opportunity presents itself. My partner is a shift worker, so being flexible with my work takes the pressure off a little bit.
Cons would be I’m not the best at selling my own pieces! I guess you could say I’m kind of shy so promoting myself puts me outside of my comfort zone at times. When you run your own business you also have to learn to wear lots of different hats; I spend a lot of time doing admin stuff, when I really would rather spend that time in the studio.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I would like to add a few more galleries to my list of stockists. Also, commissioned pieces are my favourite because it gives me the chance to create pieces that are tailormade and really very special. I hope to do much more of that in the future.
