The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
It’s certainly not a straight line when it comes to success. We have hit some bumps along the way, but that’s all part of the process and it means there’s never a dull moment! We have firm values when it comes to running an ethical and mindful business, so it often means our expenses are higher. Sourcing organic and locally grown plants or using sustainable alternatives incurs additional costs. But in the end, when we see the difference we can make, it’s so worth it.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Running our own business means we have the power to do things differently. As a family we do everything we can to help the planet, like reducing our waste, being conscious consumers and giving back where we can. So why would we do business any differently? Being in business doesn’t have to cost the earth and running our own means we have complete control. It also means we can prioritise family. We can be there when it matters and that means the world.
Being in charge of your own time, however, can mean it’s hard to stop working. Having an office at home means it’s difficult to switch off. Technology is great but it also means we’re always accessible. So, sometimes downtime is enforced. We support one another in that way and having the children around is a great way to switch focus and remember what’s really important.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
We want a business that is able to sustain both families and our staff while still giving back to the environment and the community. We want to grow, while still adhering to our values of sustainability and social responsibility.
The reason we started Wild Dispensary was to help New Zealanders harness the power of the amazing plants we have growing here. Whether that be with our products, the workshops we run or the educational resources we provide. There is a lot to be said for the power of herbal medicine and we want to help people to get more comfortable with using it. Expanding this into Australia and beyond would be a dream for us. The more people utilising the medicinal plants they have growing in their backyard the better!
