The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

One of our biggest challenges (aside from working around our energetic children) has been shipping delays. We are learning as we go, but shipping can be so unpredictable and things can change at any moment. We have had to set up a pre-ordering system a few times and while we try our best to avoid having to use it, we know it is there to be used if we need it. The challenge of working around kids is a big one, however we make it work with teamwork – if one of us has sick kids or is struggling, the other one takes over for a bit, and if one of us goes away, the other one steps up to the plate. Open and honest communication with each other has helped to ensure we can still run as smoothly as possible even through tough times.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

There are many pros to running your own business. Being able to work in with our lifestyles and choose when we work is a big one, as well as having the time to involve the older kids when possible (they love helping pack orders). It doesn’t feel like work because the business is something we are both so passionate about. We had heard the saying “Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life” (Confucius) and since starting Maia Mum, we have realised just how true that is!

In terms of cons, we cover all aspects of the business ourselves such as finance, stock, advertising, social media, etc., and so your mind is always on, thinking about what needs to happen next and where you’re at with everything. It can be really hard to switch off.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

We hope to continue to extend our range with more practical and helpful products for women after giving birth. We have extended already with a breastfeeding range and would like to continue working to expand and improve our brand and range.
