Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
I have four children – 13, 11, 9 and 18 months. I try to take my own advice and prioritise what I affectionately call ‘messy mindfulness’: utilising stolen moments to implement mindfulness and holistic health practices in our daily routine. My partner sometimes works away, so rather than set strict schedules and lists, I balance responding to my children and their needs and allow myself grace with what I achieve around work.
We incorporate things like meditation and gratitude journaling as part of our evening routine as a family, which allows for an easier bedtime routine, and that usually affords me my time to do a couple of hours work once the kids are tucked up in bed.
In times of overwhelm with the juggle, I remind myself of the beautiful Lao Tzu quote: “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
From a business perspective, I have battled with the tech and marketing side of things. It has been important to me that I can ensure my offerings are available through an online platform, and that has demanded a lot of research and learning outside of what I would normally attempt.
From a personal perspective, my partner was involved in an accident that left him with a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage at the beginning of this year, so a large amount of my energy had to move away from building the business until he recovered.
With that said though, it has been a rewarding and empowering process: learning how to navigate the various challenges that have arrived and create an offering that allows mums and their families to incorporate mindfulness and holistic health within their everyday routine.
My commitment to my own family’s wellbeing has also been strengthened through this process.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
I like to think of it all as growth and becoming – the good, the bad and the ugly. Both the pros and the cons allow me to discover more about myself, and how to best serve the women aligning with this service. I am grateful for the whole process, particularly being able to be at home with my babes, whilst doing work I genuinely love, live and breathe by.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
At the moment I am in the process of creating an online program around a wellness model I have created to guide mums to discover how to incorporate messy mindfulness in their days, nurture their wellbeing and that of their family.
I will be continuing my education around motherhood and our bodies’ innate wisdom.
My ultimate hope is to make mindfulness and holistic health concepts accessible and practical to incorporate in families’ everyday lives – and to foster deeper connection within family units as part of that discovery.
