The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

The biggest challenge has been teaching myself basically everything about business, marketing and sales. It has taken me a bit to understand it all. And I’m still learning. There is a lot of free help for small businesses, so that has been a blessing. I have definitely made a few mistakes along the way, but find I learn better that way.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

A big pro is that I get to spend lots of time with my boys during their formative years, without worrying about returning to work. Moreover, being my own boss means I have to answer only to myself – of which I can say that I am my biggest critic (this can be a pro and a con!).

A con is the daunting task of balancing multiple responsibilities, unlike conventional jobs that have built-in support systems and specialised departments for guidance. So running my own business often means tackling problems on my own.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

At this stage, I’m focusing on growing my product lines and getting my name out there. But I would love to be in a position to create my own branded products and even design a product line or two.

I would also like to learn more about the different styles of teaching so that I can have a bigger knowledge base to grow the business in the right direction.
