Educational Resources for Medically Complex Children

Busy Books are suitable for all the beautiful children of the world, of all ages and all abilities, including those with medically complex conditions, just like sweet 2.5-year-old Lola and 10-year-old Max.

Lola was born 5 weeks early measuring a tiny 1.78kg. Mum Grace had CMV (cytomegalovirus) and Lola was IUGR (inter uterine growth restriction). Lola also has been diagnosed with a chromosome deletion and has major delays in speech, gross motor, feeding and in some other areas in life.

The Busy Books have been so wonderful for helping Lola with her motor skills and particularly her speech. Mum Grace is thrilled that Lola is now saying some sounds, some animal sounds and a few words, as they were told Lola would not speak due to her chromosome deletion.

Lola has been working with her Busy Books since September 2021 and she loves them! She works on them every day either on her own or with her Mum Grace for up to 15 minutes at a time. Her favourite Busy Book is the Colours Shapes Patterns Busy Book, which she can now do most of all by herself, followed closely by the My Little Farm Busy Book. It was with the Colours Shapes Patterns Busy Book that Lola tried to say her first colour, yellow.

Mum Grace is thrilled that Lola is now saying some sounds, some animal sounds and a few words, as they were told Lola would not speak due to her chromosome deletion.

Busy Books are not only helpful for younger children but also older children with delays. Max is 10 years old and has severe intellection disability, severe Autism and global developmental delay. Max is not able to hold a pen or pencil and learning has always been quite difficult for him. Max has had his Alphabet Numbers Writing Skills Busy Book since April 2022 and he absolutely loves it!

Max really loves that he can pick up the velcro cut out pieces and stick them on the activities, which helps with his fine motor delay. He loves that he can now show his family and friends how much he actually knows through the use of his Busy Book. Mum Maggie is thrilled to see her son so engaged in the Busy Book, so happy and finally flourishing. Maggie has said they “are by far 100% the best learning tool Max has engaged and learned with yet.”
