The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Starting a business has been an extremely steep learning curve. Like most mums with little kids, on any one day, there are a million and one tasks that need to be completed. Both my kids are under 5 so finding time to meet their individual needs and launch a new business has certainly been hard.
I also often feel like I get ideas faster than I can translate them into tangible products and sometimes get frustrated at my seemingly slow progress. However, they do say that a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step, so I’m learning to be kind to myself. I constantly have to remind myself to find joy in the small steps and victories. Even now, I can see how far I’ve come in such a short space of time. That’s certainly worth celebrating.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The biggest pro is the ability to work from my own home, which allows me to have the kids with me during the day. I’m a creative person, so being able to use my gifts and talents to produce creative products has been an absolute dream come true. It’s the best thing in the world to be able to produce tools that will help others engage in quality family interactions.
It’s also wonderfully satisfying to be able to invest in others that are less fortunate than ourselves, as a portion of all Salt + Light profits also go towards helping educate children in developing countries.
A con is that running a business can be extremely time-consuming, which is especially hard when there are so many other tasks competing for your time and resources. I’m sure any parent out there knows exactly what that is like.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I foresee a lot more planning and dreaming in our future. I have so many new products and ideas that I’m currently working on and hope to launch over time. I’d love to partner with other creatives and showcase their talents in our shows and products.
I would love to be able to show our customers the difference they are making in the lives of those we support overseas whenever they purchase a product from us.
Overall, I hope to be able to continue inspiring young minds to think, create and imagine through play.
