It’s the little things: The gift of kindness and appreciation

It's the little things

It doesn’t take much to brighten someone’s day: A happy smile, a cheery “good morning!” or a small gift to make someone feel special. Tracey Carley wants to spread the message of kindness and appreciation. She started It’s the little things as an easy way for people to show their love and appreciation for someone with a special gift, delivered to them at home or at work. Here she talks about the inspiration behind her business.

The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?

As a stay-at-home mum of a three-year-old and a six-year-old, I wanted to do something that I could do from home and that I felt passionate about. The world we live in is just so busy and rushed and the simple acts of appreciation and kindness to others and ourselves are being missed. I wanted to bring back the message that a little thing or thought can go a long way and make people’s days a wee bit brighter.

When I was home with my babies, my sisters would often surprise me with a delivery of flowers. It made my day and made me think ‘I got this’, especially on those days when you are so sleep deprived and you just need someone to reassure you that you’re doing great. It was a little thing that made me smile. It’s amazing how much a little kind gesture means to people. Acts of kindness inspire kindness and I am all about spreading the love far and wide.

The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?

My business is still in the early stages, so I started out introducing the idea on my personal Facebook page. I received lots of great feedback from my friends and family, so decided to set up a Facebook page for It’s the little things. I invited friends and family to join and they have shared with their friends and families too.

The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?

I’m still feeling my way and trying to grow my market. So far, I’d have to say friends spreading the word or sharing my Facebook page for me. We live in a great community where word-of-mouth recommendations go a long way.
