LouGeorge founder Erika Cowan believes that we all need a little time to relax and unwind, and what better way than to turn the humble bath into a luxurious spa session to soak all those stresses away. Their aim is to share amazing, natural products that people love, so that they never have to turn to products with harsh chemicals, giving their customers a safe and sustainable choice when choosing products for their skin and body. They want you to look good, smell good and feel great. Here Erika talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about what inspired her to start LouGeorge, the pros and cons of running her own business, and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
After being made redundant from a sales role, I thought, Why not sell my own product instead of finding new clients to sell theirs? When thinking of what to sell, it just evolved to really telling a story about my children – LouGeorge being a merge of their names Laura and Georgia, and then the profile names around things relating to them.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
There was a lot of jotting ideas down, sometimes in the middle of the night, because that’s when the best ones come to you, right? Waking you from a great sleep and then not wanting to forget it in the morning!
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
The biggest breakthrough was definitely the first sale that didn’t come from a direct lead from family and friends. It was both an exciting and scary moment having someone choose you out of all the similar products available.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Now my girls are adults, business has almost become a replacement of my time. I am someone who thrives most when I am busy. I guess it makes me feel a sense of purpose, however I also make sure I have a routine of “me time”, whether it’s a morning spent with a face mask or a soak in a bath at the end of the day. I create products that I constantly use, so that’s super helpful.
