The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Being self-funded as a start up was a huge challenge in the early days and wanting to do everything from the ground up. Projects and goals take a bit longer and cost more that way, eek! But things are also a whole lot more satisfying and incredibly rewarding as you experience projects being realised. Sticking with our ethical values sometimes meant saying no, and that has been challenging. Not because of the ethics – being palm oil free is a no brainer for example – but because it has meant things sometimes take longer to develop as we source alternatives or different pathways for instance. Patience has been challenging!!!
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
You can’t escape it. It is always with you. When you are passionate about your business, sometimes it is difficult to stop thinking about it or wanting to do just a little bit more when you should take a break. Everything has personal meaning and it can be difficult to be objective sometimes, especially about things we get excited about which is pretty much everything.
The silver lining is that running your own business generally allows you to be more flexible around family and home as a priority. So grateful for flexibility even if it means working at weird and wee hours to get the work done.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
So many hopes and dreams! We have a big drawing board with a pretty healthy list of products waiting to finish development. Some are due to be released this year, so blissed about this every time…patience Amanda patience!
Lately we have been in discussion with some pretty amazing people doing some frontline work we would like to be able to be a part of, supporting with our knowledge and more. Community means a lot to us and giving back to community in these ways will be a dream come true.
Recipe for Mayella ice tea
Prepare at least 1 hour in advance.
Boil water.
Add 1 heaped teaspoon Mayella Ginger Kisses per two people to a plunger or teapot.
Pour just off the boil water to tea and let brew for 5-10 minutes depending how strong you like your herbal tea.
Let cool. Once cool pour tea into glass bottle or glasses and add ice cubes. You can add a slice of lemon or orange if you wish.
Tip: once your tea is brewed, cooled and poured onto a glass bottle, you can store your ice tea in the fridge for up to a week, ready to be enjoyed any time. Remember to strain so no herbs are in your stored ice tea.
Visit the Mayella website to see their full range of products, and join their Facebook and Instagram communities.
