The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
The biggest challenge was overcoming my fear of failure. I think anyone who starts a project or business would feel this at some point and I definitely felt it hard at the start. It can be a lot to put yourself out there and the fear of it all blowing up in my face was terrifying. Once I started to make those steps and really focus on what I was doing it got easier. Knowing my product well and having tried and tested it, I believe 100% that it is a great product so I just had to keep reminding myself of that. Once the feedback started coming in, it really eased my fears as I knew my customers were loving them too.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Doing what I love is a huge pro. I am a hard worker by nature and have always thrived being busy. Working in the corporate world, I got so sick of trying to prove my worth to progress up a ladder that never paid me enough for my time and took me from my kids. Now I work part time to keep the bills paid and do Bubba Delish in time around my kids. I definitely feel more balanced with work/life now. I also now know my worth and don’t feel I have to prove that to anyone. It has definitely helped me find my confidence again. I did take a pay cut to do it and once I found peace with that I knew it was the right choice.
The cons are that it is also really hard. I can be working 7 days a week, late nights, early mornings and trying to bake cookies in any spare moment I have. It can be exhausting. It’s also an industry with no guarantee which can be scary. My customers won’t be customers forever due to the nature of my product so I need to keep evolving. I love it though and wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s hard but I feel so much freer.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
The end goal is to work Bubba Delish full time. I am always working on new product ideas and flavours so hoping to expand on my standard, vegan and allergy ranges to keep them delicious and exciting. I am also looking at working with different suppliers and distributors to give more accessibility to our products. I have a few other things up my sleeve but they are a work in progress so watch this space!
