Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
In the earlier years of Pilates Fitness, my daughters and I lived above the studio. Talking work-family balance, there was none! It was hilarious at the time as you’d hear little footsteps coming down the stairs and the studio door would open a tiny crack just enough for a bit of hand to poke through an apple or the bottle of milk shaking backward and forwards to get my attention. Everyone would giggle as I’d say yes you can have an apple or yes you can have a glass of milk. It was hard back then to juggle, I was a mother living on my own with two young daughters, working too many hours and giving in to every client’s request. It took some years before I realized I wasn’t valuing myself and what a great instructor I was/am. If people really want what you offer they will fit in around you. Hence, now I only work the hours that work for my family too.
The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?
So many people were telling me a Pilates Fitness Studio would NEVER work. Work colleagues, friends and family were telling me I’d fail and be sorry for leaving my full time job to pursue my dream. You can’t create a business out of mat Pilates!
These negative comments still drive me today to be the best that I can possibly be. I absolutely love my job, it’s gratifying and with my pregnant clients, magical. What a privilege to witness beautiful blossoming mamas-to-be as their bodies change through their pregnancies. Especially the first time mama…breathtaking.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
There are too many pros to list! The one GIANT con is how difficult it is to get away from the industry, taking a holiday. This has to be well thought out and prepared.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I’d love all the pregnant mamas of New Zealand and Australia to experience Pilates Fitness. Try ONE class and you “feel the difference”!
