Shelter buddies: Children practice their reading to shelter pups

By Hannah Schenker

This Missouri-based organisation is doing great things: combining children practicing their reading with shelter pups who could use a little loving attention.

The children get to sit down and relax with a book, spelling out their words and getting their mouths around a story, while the puppies soak up the attention, giving both participants a warm and loving experience.

The idea behind the program is to make these dogs more adoptable, by socialising them with children. High energy dogs learn to calm down, while the shy ones have a chance to relax around people. Not only that, these children bring comfort to these lonely pups, reduce their anxiety and also promote empathy within the children involved. Win Win.
