The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
It’s definitely a new challenge running a business where the service Mona and I provide is the product. I’m used to marketing other people or businesses. Now, having to do it for myself has taken some getting used to.
Also, not trying to be everything to everybody can be challenging. Mona and I have a very clear idea of what we are good at and the service we can provide to a business. By understanding this, we can speak with passion and conviction about our work with our clients and both parties are happier at the end of the day.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
There are many pros to running your own business, I can set my own schedule to suit my business and family commitments. There is less mum guilt too. Working with a variety of clients makes me a better Virtual Assistant as I can bring skills learnt with one client to the next.
In terms of cons, time is a big one. I feel like I need an eighth day in the week to enable me to focus on growing the business and doing simple things like our own website updates.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
We would really like to support more clients in the NFP sector. Having worked at the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) for four years and currently supporting some NFP clients, it’s obvious that the sector needs some help with governance principles, CoSec support and bookkeeping, all without inflated administrative costs. We have developed some NFP offers that aim to ease some of the burden and increase their compliance.
