The Smaller Electricity Company Out to Give Us a Bright Future

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

With seven children under six years old amongst the team, the motivation is there to make a difference. Alan said, “It’s a real blessing to be able to have so many of us involved in growing the business. There’s enough of us to cover the variety of issues that come up with working around childcare.” Arran added, “Doing things differently goes right through to ways of working and we trust each other and our teams to get the job done rather than dictate hours of working.”

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

The biggest challenge is definitely share of voice. Lauren says, “In a crowded market with lots of confusing messages, we’ve chosen to promote the fact that we are smaller as a point of difference. And in line with that, we choose to work with smaller, more community-based business and media to make sure we are contributing back to the local communities in which we operate. We hope that by being consistently present and respectfully contributing to these groups, we will be first choice when they are ready to switch electricity provider.”

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

It’s important to find your passion when you’re running your own business. Ed said, “This is about all our future. People hopefully find that they agree with the values Bright Spark Power wants to support. We want to be a choice that is like people changing from plastic bags – a small thing that an individual can do, but that is supporting the values of transparency and driving a plan for change in the electricity industry.”

Hopes and dreams: What next?

Arran said, “Everything we are doing is driving towards Our Ten-Year Plan to get to 100% renewable energy. Our customers already respond well to being able to call us and chat through whatever questions they have with no pressure – we know that works. Additionally, we have just launched and are now the electricity provider of choice for all new electric vehicle owners in New South Wales, because we offer an amazing 19 hours off peak usage and are able to install home car charging when you sign up. We’ll be looking to home batteries and other tech to help us reach our goals, as well as continuing to talk to our customers to make sure we’re delivering on their expectations.”
