Thrive & Not Just Survive Early Motherhood: Support & Honest Expert Advice from Bump to Baby

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

Self-doubt has been a challenge, and trusting in my instinct, which remains strong even though the babies I care for aren’t my own. I’ve come across mothers who have doubted their instinct because medical professionals told them it’s normal, they’ll outgrow it and even the most frustrating of all, “This is your first baby isn’t it?”, which I find so damaging to your confidence early on in motherhood.

My biggest hurdle is finding a way to help everyone, to know what support is valued and how to reach mothers in a time when they need the guidance or a hand hold.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

Where do I start? It’s hard to put into words just how hard running your own business is. I think there are such contrasts between highs and lows, then the middle ground often feels like you’re just keeping afloat. In terms of pros, you are reaching more mamas than you ever would, you’re working in a way that truly aligns with your beliefs, your passion and you know you’re giving something back. To be recognised as an expert in your field is a proud moment and I still suffer with imposter syndrome.

It is however a constant graft, and being present on social media is draining. When self-doubt creeps in about being self-employed, it is truly the feedback that keeps you going. Being your own boss – a one man band – isn’t easy but is all worth it. Even if I make a small impact, then my job is done.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

My first dream (that I’m inching closer to achieving in 2024) is my course platform for new and expectant mothers: a go-to hub for navigating life with a young baby. While I know it’s easy to become overwhelmed by expectations and advice, my role is to help you navigate bump, birth and baby so you feel reassured, confident and calm as you find your feet in early motherhood.

My bigger dream or long-term goal is to launch an app or a platform which becomes a community for mothers, with access to everything they’d need throughout pregnancy and the first two years of motherhood. I realise that a village is what we all really need, so I’d love to bring together the expertise of others such as IBCLCs, Doulas, Birth workers, Osteopaths and so much more. A girl can dream and dream big too!
