The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
It was a sequence of events which sort of fell into place for me. I was going to be made redundant from an administration job so I went to the Yellow Pages (yes it was that long ago) and opened the book. It opened at massage therapy so that was it – the decision was made. I found a local massage school and trained part time while I was still working. When my job did finally end, I had already started working with clients.
Around 18 months after that I found myself pregnant with twins, so needless to say there was not much massage happening as I was very, very unwell. From there I included other modalities which were in line with where my family were at that time. First came baby massage – I became a baby massage instructor. This is still something I just love doing. I love the thought of parents being able to connect – I mean really connect – with their children. After that was foot joint mobilisation – I did that because my daughter was quite knock-kneed and fell over often. I helped her feet to work much better and actually be able to feel confident about running and moving around. Then I went on to do emotional therapies, again because of the girls who were very anxious and stressed about every change and challenge they came across. Also, for years I had seen how stress had impacted the body on a physical level through the massage I had been doing.
I have seen so many people return time and time again with a “sore something” that just doesn’t change. Most people these days are prepared to consider that there is an emotional component to wellness…
The Launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
There was no real launch, it was more of a progression as the girls grew and became more independent. I worked the hours they allowed me to. I tried to get to as many of their events as I possibly could and spend as much time with them as I could. Now as they go into their last year of school and grow into young women, I am obviously much more able to focus on my business and what I need to do in that part of my life.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
The biggest breakthrough for me was coming to the emotional therapies. I have seen so many people return time and time again with a “sore something” that just doesn’t change. Most people these days are prepared to consider that there is an emotional component to wellness but others are not. If people are calm and well in their thoughts and beliefs, they feel better in their bodies and recovery is quicker and easier.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
I have been a single parent for the last 5 years so balance has been a real challenge. For the most part, the last 5 years have been about doing the most important thing that day, sometimes in that minute.
