A is for Adrenaline

So why is labour painful?
Basically, it’s the tensing up. When anxious and scared during labour, adrenaline builds up and the inner circular (also known as the ‘passive segment’) uterus muscles tighten, BUT our surges (contractions) continue via our longitudinal (‘active segment’) muscles. This means that your baby is pressing onto seized muscles that should be relaxed.
Therefore, it is important to remain calm through your labour. If you achieve this, your birth can be a manageable and positive experience and it’s precisely one of the many things hypnobirthing teaches you.

And THAT is what I experienced
I class both my births as “pain-free”. Which is in no way a brag – it’s just how it was. This is not to say that it was easy, I certainly felt plenty of sensations, some more intense than others – but it was manageable.

…it is important to remain calm through your labour. If you achieve this, your birth can be a manageable and positive experience and it’s precisely one of the many things hypnobirthing teaches you.

And I know there are THOUSANDS of women who have experienced the same but unfortunately do not share their story, for when we have a positive experience, we rarely offer that story freely because we are happy and continue with our days and lives. We are built for survival, which means we focus on the negative easily.

You can have 1,000 positive comments, reviews, testimonials, compliments, yet it is the 1 negative remark that sticks in your mind – possibly for years.

So please, if this was you and you have a positive birth story, please share it. The birthing world needs you.

And this, you lovely lot, is just the tip of the hypno iceberg.

Aw man wish I’d been lucky enough to read this before my first baby. Being calm is so important, thanks for sharing!
