The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Oooh this is hard. I am still learning so much. A big one has been putting myself out there. I love creating products but getting them out into the world can be hard and sometimes disheartening. There is doubt and fear that can creep in, wondering if anyone will even be interested in something you have spent many hours creating. This idea of marketing yourself and your work and creating content for social media can be overwhelming. But whenever I start and get into a flow, I always try be authentic, honest and relatable because that’s what I love about those I follow. And it turns out, the energy I put out would come back around, with beautiful responses, sales and inquiries that all mean so much – I definitely smile and do the little happy dance whenever I get an order!
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
A big pro for me is this feeling of doing something for myself. As a mother, it feels like you are doing everything for everyone else and having this passion project that is all about me feels good.
Another pro has been the amazing connections and the online community of mamas and birth workers that I have found through creating this business. They inspire me every day and are always supporting each other and their businesses.
A con at the moment for me is finding the balance. There’s already so much going on – adding in trying to create a business is pretty hectic. It can sometimes come with guilt that you are stressed or distracted because you are wanting to just finish a task in between doing everything else.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
In the near future, I want to create more products centred around our rites of passage – birth and our first periods and just menstrual cycles in general. I dream to inspire and create conversation around these subjects through my art. As a society, we have forgotten the importance, sacredness and magic we hold within our bodies so I want to be part of the change!
My dreams for my business feels so limitless. I know it could go so many ways and I’m excited to see what unfolds. I’m not sure where exactly it will go but am always reminding myself to follow my heart.
